Our Mission
Tartan and Panther Swing is a student-run group to promote swing and blues dancing at Carnegie Mellon University, University of Pittsburgh, and throughout Pittsburgh. We offer free, high quality lessons to the public in an open and friendly environment to engage and excite dancers of all levels. Social Dance Classes We regularly hold classes in lindy hop, blues, charleston, and balboa. You don't need to worry about bringing a partner—we rotate partners during lessons so you'll have a chance to dance with just about every lead or follow in the room! What to Expect You absolutely do not need to bring a partner with you! People come to dance with everybody. Dancing with everybody will help you meet new people and it will improve your dancing: a win-win situation! If you're asked to dance, we encourage you to say "yes!" There is absolutely no commitment past the 3 minute dance, but if you want to, occasionally people dance two or even three songs in a row. Of course, if you are uncomfortable for any reason, come find one of the organizers and we will address the situation immediately. Check out the Code of Conduct page for more details of etiquette and what is and isn't expected while dancing. You'll learn the most and improve the fastest by regularly attending classes and then sticking around for the social dances to try out your new moves. If you see a dancer who's better than you, ask them to dance! Everyone started out as a beginner, and you can learn a lot from dancing with people at all levels. |
Attire
Dress casually and comfortably. A few people gussy up a bit too, and we always appreciate their style. We have a strong focus on making our partners happy and comfortable, so some dancers bring changes of shirt in case they get too sweaty throughout the night, and breath mints are never a bad idea!
